2018 Detert Family Vineyards Cabernet Franc Oakville
The wine boasts freshness, nuance, and intensity. Aromas of sage, lavender, and tobacco flow off the rim. The body is big, but not fat. It’s nicely structured with minerality, dark chocolate, and smooth layers of dark fruit. This is an absolutely stunning representation of what Cabernet Franc should be.
95 points, Vinous Media
Cabernet Franc is currently the most expensive grape in the country. Everyone is paying high-dollar to blend Cab. Franc (Cabernet Sauvignon’s genetic father) with their big Cabernet Sauvignon’s, or simply to make it on its own. The issue is that there’s not enough to go around, as most of The Valley is planted to other varietals. Luckily, we’re neighbors to one of the most highly sought-after vineyards planted to C.F.
Today, we have a historic wine from this coveted varietal, which neighbors the infamous To-Kalon vineyard in Oakville. The fruit was once a major component of Mondavi’s Reserve wines and is now being produced under the Detert label. A mere 250 cases are produced every vintage and Galloni notes that it’s “A stunning, riveting wine, the 2018 Cabernet Franc possesses breathtaking aromatic intensity and nuance, not to mention tons of class.”
